Duke of Edinburgh Award, 2019

Clouds lingered in the sky as a menacing warning that the weather can change quickly. Luckily the sun broke through the clouds as year 9 and year 12 students embarked on the first day of their Duke of Edinburgh award expedition from Chipping, Lancashire.

They were self-sufficient for up to three days cooking their own food, building their own tents and navigating themselves across the Lancashire countryside. After several hours they arrived at Waddecar campsite where they socialised and had some well-deserved rest before the night ahead in their tents.

The next two days followed a similar pattern. The students developed key life skills like communication, teamwork and leadership during their time on the expedition as well as making lifelong memories of their days at NLA.

“It was a privilege to join the Bronze and Silver DofE groups for the summer expeditions. All students demonstrated grit and determination to meet the challenges, especially the gruelling walks between camps” Says Patrick Ottley-O’Connor, Executive Principle at North Liverpool Academy.

The Duke of Edinburgh award is currently offered to two year groups at the Academy. Students in Year 9 complete the Bronze award and those students in Year 12 then complete the silver award.
