Literacy and Oracy

Our school is a place of words, spoken, written and read.

Literacy and oracy are vital skills in learning and life. A central objective at NLA is to extend the vocabulary and literacy of every pupil. Summer schools before entry to year 7 begin the journey with language and you will see words all around North Liverpool Academy.

Language is central to every aspect of learning at school and is developed by all teachers in every department and lesson. Literacy and oracy are supported across school by all staff in all lessons as well as by a team of specialists who deliver formal assessment, development sessions for vocabulary, individual support through phonics, guided reading and enrichment throughout the school curriculum.

We hold year group assembles where students present and invited authors to speak with the students. Co-curricular clubs include debating, family history and classical civilisation and are designed to encourage talk both inside school and at home.

Language is central to everything we do in our lives and it is fun!

Our students are encouraged to talk, read and present.

Everyone has a voice which is valued at NLA.

LITERACY

Welcome to North Liverpool Academy's Literacy Offer

At North Liverpool Academy, we are dedicated to creating a vibrant literacy community where every student is empowered to become a confident communicator and a lifelong learner. Together, we will continue to cultivate a love of language that transcends the classroom and prepares our students for future success.

We take pride in fostering a rich literary environment that permeates every aspect of our educational experience. Our commitment to literacy is not confined to a single department: rather, it is a holistic approach that engages all teachers across all subjects, ensuring that every student develops essential communication skills.

Departmental Literacy Initiatives

Each department at North Liverpool Academy plays a pivotal role in enhancing literacy skills. Our dedicated educators integrate literacy strategies into their curricula, reinforcing the importance of language and communication in their respective subjects. Here are some highlights:

  • English Department: Our English curriculum is designed to ignite a passion for reading and writing. We offer diverse literary texts, creative writing opportunities, and rigorous analysis, allowing students to explore language in depth.
  • Mathematics Department: We recognise that literacy extends beyond traditional language arts. Our maths teachers emphasise mathematical vocabulary and problem-solving language, equipping students with the skills to articulate their reasoning clearly.
  • Science Department: In science, we promote scientific literacy through the development of reading comprehension and technical writing skills. Students engage in experiments and reports that require precise scientific vocabulary and language and effective communication of complex ideas.
  • Humanities Department: Our humanities courses encourage students to explore historical and cultural texts, fostering critical thinking and discourse. We emphasise the importance of argumentation and evidence-based writing.
Whole-School Literacy Strategies

Beyond departmental initiatives, our school-wide literacy strategies ensure that every student has access to the support they need to thrive:

  • Literacy Across the Curriculum: All staff members are trained to support literacy development in their lessons, using techniques that enhance vocabulary, comprehension, and communication skills.
  • Specialist Support: Our literacy team provides targeted interventions, formal assessments, and enrichment programmes, including phonics instruction and guided reading sessions tailored to individual student needs.
  • Co-Curricular Opportunities: We believe in the power of extracurricular activities to enhance literacy skills. Our clubs, such as debating and creative writing, encourage students to express themselves confidently and articulate their thoughts effectively.
  • Engaging Assemblies and Events: Year group assemblies featuring student presentations and guest speakers enrich our literacy culture, providing students with opportunities to engage with language in meaningful ways.
