what is british science week?
British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths that took place between 7-16 March 2025. For more information, click here.
British Science Week at North Liverpool Academy was a fantastic celebration of learning, discovery, and hands-on experiences. Students had the opportunity to explore a wide range of scientific topics through exciting workshops, interactive demonstrations, and engaging masterclasses. Here’s a recap of some of the highlights from this incredible week.
Creepy Crawly Show: Meeting Amazing Animals
On Tuesday, we were thrilled to welcome Jungle Johnny and his incredible animals to North Liverpool Academy. Students, staff, and visiting primary school pupils from Thomas Gray and New Park had the chance to learn about fascinating creatures and how they have adapted to their environments—tying in perfectly with this year’s British Science Week theme of ‘Adapt’.
Students had the exciting opportunity to see and even hold animals such as snakes, tarantulas, scorpions, lizards, giant African snails, and hissing cockroaches. Jungle Johnny provided engaging explanations about each animal’s unique adaptations, making this a truly memorable learning experience for everyone involved.
Wonderstruck: The Power of Physics
On Thursday, we were lucky to host Peter Jones from Wonderstruck, who brought science to life with thrilling demonstrations about forces, motion, and energy transfers. Students watched in amazement as he showcased his pulse jet engine, lay on a bed of nails, and used different types of rocket fuels to create exciting whizz-bang experiments.
Primary school students from New Park and Four Oaks joined us for this incredible show and were able to sit at the front, giving them a fantastic view of the action. The demonstrations sparked curiosity and excitement, showing students just how fun and dynamic physics can be.
Biomedical Science Masterclass at the University of Liverpool
Our A-level Biology students had the incredible opportunity to visit the University of Liverpool for a Biomedical Science Masterclass. During the visit, students learned about advanced research techniques and used real scientific equipment.
One of the key activities involved loading an electrophoresis gel, a method used to separate DNA fragments by size. They also examined the effects of anti-cancer drugs by observing cancer cells under a microscope, using a special dye to see which cells had been affected by the treatment.
In the afternoon, students attended talks about university courses and cutting-edge research in cell imaging and model organisms. This visit gave them valuable insight into the world of biomedical science and the exciting possibilities for future study and careers.
The School Food Showdown: Learning to Eat Well
On Friday, we welcomed Ben Melton to deliver his School Food Showdown, an interactive session that taught students how to make healthy and delicious meals.
Students from Years 7 to 10 took part in a fun cooking competition inspired by the TV show ‘Ready Steady Cook’. Some students became chefs, while others were tasters and judges, making for an exciting and engaging session. Visiting primary students from New Park and Four Oaks also had the chance to take part in their own special version of the event. This session gave students a greater understanding of nutrition and the importance of making healthy food choices.
British Science Week at North Liverpool Academy was a huge success, filled with exciting experiences that inspired curiosity and a love of science. We are incredibly proud of all the students who took part and look forward to more fantastic science opportunities in the future.
